American playwright Max Sparber.

Max Sparber (born Matthew Harold Sparber on May 8, 1968) is an American playwright.

Sparber was born in Minneapolis, but moved to Los Angeles in the early 90s, where he was involved with a theater troupe for homeless teenagers begun and initially headed by actress Shelley Winters. During that time, he was briefly homeless, and spent three months in a shelter run by the Gay/Lesbian Community Services Center of Los Angeles. Although Sparber himself is not gay, his experiences with homelessness and at the shelter continues to inform his playwrighting, which usually details the experiences of minority or marginalized characters.

Sparber has a long affiliation with the Blue Barn Theatre of Omaha, Nebraska. He debuted his play Minstrel Show; Or, The Lynching of William Brown at the theater in 1998. This two-person play details the lynching of an African-American man in Omaha in 1919 as told through the narration of two itinerant blackface minstrels. The play later moved to Queens and Manhattan in coproductions by Queens Theatre in the Park, and has enjoy frequent productions in the United States.

Sparber has worked as a theater critic for newspapers in Omaha and Minneapolis, including a three-year stint with City Pages. He infrequently appears as a performer, including costarring in the debut of a musical production of The Toxic Avenger in 2004.

In 2005, Sparber became the first playwright to release his collected works under a Creative Commons license.

Sparber is a first cousin of American actor Judd Hirsch.

In August of 2005, Sparber was among the evacuees of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. He currently resides in Las Vegas.
