From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Doris Roberts (born on November 4, 1930) in St. Louis, Missouri) is an American actress of Russian Jewish descent. She began her career on Broadway in the 1950s, and expanded into small roles as victims in movies such as The Honeymoon Killers and No Way to Treat a Lady.
She is best known for her work as the nosy, insufferable, wonderful Italian mother/cook, Marie Barone, in the long-running American TV series Everybody Loves Raymond. She also appeared as "Mildred Krebs" in the 1980s series, Remington Steele, which starred Pierce Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist.
She has been nominated for nine Emmy awards and won in 2001, 2002 2003 and 2005 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Everybody Loves Raymond, and was also nominated in 1999 and 2000. She also won an Emmy for a guest role on St. Elsewhere, and was nominated for Remington Steele.
Her second husband was writer William Goyen, reputedly a bisexual (according to Boze Hadleigh).
It is impossible to know her birth name as she has consistently refused to name her father, but her middle name is indeed May.
