Merna Kennedy (b. 7 September 1908 in Kankakee, Illinois, d. 20 December 1944 in Los Angeles, California) was an American actress of the late silent era. Kennedy (born Maude Kahler) was born in Kankakee, Illinois. Kennedy, who was 5' 2" with red hair is best known for her role opposite Charlie Chaplin in The Circus (1928). She is rumored to have had an affair during filming with Chaplin while he separated from his first wife, Mildred Harris. She continued acting, starring in early sound films, but retired in 1934, when she married choreographer/director Busby Berkeley. The marriage broke up a year later. Kennedy died of heart attack at the age of 36.
