Alexander Mackendrick (September 8, 1912 - December 22, 1993) was a Scottish-American film director.

Mackendrick was born to Scottish parents in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Scotland. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art and made films both in Britain and in Hollywood.

He directed only 9 films but several of them have become classics. He is most famous for his comedies for Ealing Studios: especially Whisky Galore, The Man in the White Suit and The Ladykillers. His first US film: Sweet Smell of Success, starring Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis, in a biting drama about a New York gossip columnist, has also become a classic.

In 1969, he accepted the position as Dean of the Film Department of the California Institute of the Arts, an office he held until shortly before his passing at the age of eighty-one in Los Angeles, California.
