Goran Višnjić (born September 9, 1972) is a Croatian actor who appeared in several American film and television productions.
Višnjić was born in a Croatian coastal city of Šibenik. He began acting in child's plays and his talent became evident in early age. He made his screen debut in controversial Serbian 1988 film Braća po materi where he played young Croatian extremist.
When Yugoslavia began to break-up, Višnjić was doing one-year service in Yugoslav People's Army. He left the JNA and returned to Šibenik to join the nascent Croatian Army in defending his home town against Krajina Serbs supported by the JNA. His war record is shrouded in apocryphal stories, mostly those describing him as an elite and deadly soldier who destroyed number of Serb tanks and killed dozens of Serb soldiers. Višnjić himself neither confirms nor denies those stories, although there is speculation about him being mistaken for another elite soldier with similar name. Other stories tell that his hair went partially grey due to combat fatigue.
After leaving the Croatian Army he went to study acting at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb.
Prior to ER, Višnjić had small speaking roles in films like The Peacemaker, Welcome to Sarajevo and Practical Magic. In 1998 he also appeared in Madonna's music video The Power of Goodbye, and had a cameo in the movie Rounders.
His most prominent role has been that of Dr. Luka KovaÄ in the television series ER. He joined ER in the sixth season (late 1999) and as of 2005 remains on the cast.
In the meantime he co-starred in the movie The Deep End, voice-acted in Ice Age as well as played the protagonist in Posljednja volja and Doctor Sleep.
More recently, he starred in the mini-series Spartacus and the Croatian movie and television series Duga mraÄna noć. He appeared with Jennifer Garner in the movie Elektra.
It has been confirmed that Goran is one of the contenders for the role of 007 in Casino Royale, the yet to be produced 21st James Bond film from Sony Pictures.
Višnjić is married to Ivana Vrdoljak, the daughter of Croatian director Antun Vrdoljak. They've announced their intention to move to Italy after Visnjic's ER contract ends in 2006.
