Born in Nancy, France on September 12, 1948, he grew up in Morocco before returning to France to study and complete military service. He began racing in various paved-track events and shared the Formula 3 French national championship with Alain Prost. In 1981 he won the European Formula 3 Championship and also placed second in the Le Mans 24 Hours. He moved to Formula 2 in 1982 and dabbled in Formula 1 the following year, but it didn't pan out for him. The mid-1980s saw Schlesser perform in touring car and Grand Prix racing, with the infamous 1988 Grand Premio d'Italia as a substitute for Nigel Mansell win the Williams-Judd being memorable, as Schlesser took out Ayrton Senna in the first chicane with two laps remaining, leading to a Ferrari 1-2 in Monza just weeks after Enzo Ferrari's death. He won the "Classic Masters" title at the 1994 Race of Champions.
He began to build his own dune buggies in the 1990's to compete in desert marathons and went on to capture the Paris Dakar Rally title in 1999 and 2000.
