Betty Smith was an American author, born in Brooklyn in 1896, who wrote the instant bestseller, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, published in 1943.
The novel, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, traced the physical and emotional development into womanhood of a poor girl named Francie, born in 1901, the book begins when Francie is eleven years old in 1912 and ends when she is sixteen and a half, in 1918. This book is hailed to be one of the greatest American literary achievements of all time.
Smith published three other books: Tomorrow Will Be Better, Joy in the Morning and Maggie-Now. All four novels are compelling character studies and studies of family interactions. At the dawn of the 21st Century, "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," is still an immensely popular novel that reaches out to people of all ages.
