Michel Butor is a French novelist and essayist known for contributing to the literary genre of the nouveau roman.
Michel Marie Francois Butor was born in Mons-en-Baroeul on September 14, 1926. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, graduating in 1947. He has taught in Egypt, Manchester, Salonika, and Geneva. He has won many literary awards for his work, including the Prix Apollo, the Prix Fénéon and the Prix Renaudot. His novels could be best classified as experimental science fiction. He uses many interesting literary techniques typical of the nouveau roman, if anything can be said to be typical of such a genre, such as writing entire novels in the second person.
