From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Jacques Copeau (1879 – 1949) was an influential French theatre director, producer, critic, and playwright. He founded the Nouvelle revue française with Andre Gide, and the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier in Paris in 1913. Among the company were Charles Dullin and Louis Jouvet. Copeau was heavily influenced by Edward Gordon Craig, Adolphe Appia, and Emil Jaques-Dalcroze.
Copeau lectured and gave recitals in New York in 1927, exerting great influence on Harold Clurman and the Group Theatre in America.
Copeau was named head of the Comédie Française in 1941. His later work consisted of large outdoor pageants.
