Meera Jasmine whose real name is Jasmine Mary Joseph, is a leading South Indian actress, who has done hit movies in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada, and won India's National Award for Best Actress. She made a quiet debut in Malayalam movie Soothradharan, but made herself a leading actress through the phenomenal success of her first Tamil movie, Run. This was followed by critically acclaimed performances in Padam Onnu Oru Vilapam (her national-award winning Malayalam movie), Maniratnam's Ayudha Ezhuthu (Tamil) and her Telugu debut movie Ammayi Bagundi (which translates as "This girl is good!") She is currently working in a whole host of Tamil and Telugu movies, and has received a couple of Hindi offers which she did not accept.

History

She was born on 15 February 1983 in Kuttappuzha, Thiruvalla to Joseph Philip and Aleyamma. She completed her schooling in Mar Thoma Residential School in Thiruvalla. She currently resides in Panampilly Nagar in Kochi (formerly Cochin). She made her debut in the film Soothradharan in 2001.

Awards

  • National Award for the Best Actress in 2003 for the film Paadhom Onnu: Oru Vilaapam (roughly translates to 'Lesson One: A Wail') in which she portrayed a Muslim girl who is a victim of Child Marriage.
  • Kerala State Award for the Best Actress in 2003 for the films Kasthooriman ('Musk Deer') and Paadhom Onnu: Oru Vilaapam ('Lesson One: A Wail').
