Mississippi-born soprano Ruby Elzy (1908-1943) was a pioneer black opera singer who created role of Serena in George Gershwin's folk opera Porgy and Bess. She also appeared on Broadway in the musical John Henry, in films (The Emperor Jones, Birth of the Blues), on radio and the concert stage.
