George Călinescu (1899 - 1965) was a Romanian novelist, poet, playwright, literary critic, and essayist. he was born in Bucharest, where he later went to university studying Italian, but much of his formative years was spent in Iasi. Much of his life was spent moving between these two centres, as he gained his PhD in Iasi and lectured at the university there, before becoming professor at Bucharest University in 1945.
During he years of the communist regime, Calinescu traveled throughout the Eastern Bloc, publishing journals of his travels. He also published monograms on Eminescu, Filimon and others, and a massive tome on the history of Romanian literature. He died on March 12 1965 of cirrhosis.
