Reverend Bernice Albertine King (born March 28, 1963 Atlanta, Georgia) is the daughter of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the only one of his children to become a Minister.

Career

On April 4, 1968, Bernice Alberine King was only five when her father died. At the age of 17, she was invited to speak at the United Nations in the absence of her mother Coretta Scott King. She graduated from Spelman College with a degree in psychology before undertaking a Doctorate of Law at Emory University. At the age of 24, she decided to become a Minister and also completed a Masters Degree in Divinity. On July 3, 1988, King married Ron Dexter Peterson in California. On January 2, 1990, they had a first child named Liam. On April 27, 1992, they had a second named Mark. On February 22, 1995, they had a third child named Rachel. On May 25, 1998, they had a fourth child named Lizzie. And finally, on March 30, 2002, they had a fifth and last child named Alison.

Due to her profile and skill in public speaking, King has been asked to speak around the world. In 1996, she published a collection of her sermons and speeches called Hard Questions, Heart Answers which received a positive review from USA Today in 1999. In the summer of 2000, she narrated the Lincoln Portrait at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival in Kiel.

Reverend King currently preaches at the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Lithonia, Georgia under the leadership of Bishop Eddie Long. This church has 25,000 members. She is currently a member of the Georgia Bar and works as a mediator. Ebony Magazine named her as one of their Ten of Tomorrow future leaders of the black community.

Bernice King participated in a march against same-sex marriage in Atlanta, Georgia, in December 2004. The march also supported improved access to health and education for blacks. In contrast, Bernice's mother, Coretta Scott King, is a long-time supporter of gay rights. With her brother Martin Luther King III, she has played an active part in reforming the Southern Christian Leadership Conference once led by her father.
