From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Kay Francis, born Katharine Naomi Gibbs on January 13, 1899, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Katharine Edwina Gibbs, who would establish the Katharine Gibbs system of vocational schools, which exist and thrive to this very day, after her marriage ended and she had a child to raise. She lived in and was educated at Catholic convent schools.
One of the top film stars of the 1930s, the dark, talented beauty appeared in many films between 1929 and 1946 when she retired from acting after years of turbulence, studio mistreatment and public disfavour, including the films The Cocoanuts (with the Marx Brothers), Trouble in Paradise, Jewel Robbery, and In Name Only.
She died of cancer at the age of 69 on August 26, 1968, in New York City and left most of her very large estate to the companies that provide seeing eye dogs to the blind.
She was married 5 times, but it was an open secret in Hollywood that she was a lesbian. As Marjorie Main told Boze Hadleigh when he interviewed her for his book on 10 Hollywood lesbians: "I always heard she was queer for the ladies".
