Tito Ortiz (born January 23, 1975) is a Mexican-American participant of the sport of mixed martial arts, or 'MMA'. Ortiz's career has been mostly within the UFC organisation.

Career

Former Light-Heavyweight UFC champion, Ortiz has become one of the sport's most shining stars, headlining several Pay Per View championship undercards, and appearing on the covers of various magazines, such as Black Belt Magazine. He is a native of Huntington Beach, California.

Ortiz began his martial arts career as a wrestler in his sophomore year of high school, eventually becoming champion for the state of California. He later went on to wrestle for California State University, Bakersfield. His Mixed martial arts debut was at UFC 13. He beat Wes Albittron on the tournament's first round, but lost a bout that he was dominating early on to Guy Mezger in the next round.

Ortiz lost his Light Heavyweight belt to Randy Couture in UFC 44. He has been involved with several rivalries with other fighters, including Ken Shamrock and Chuck Liddell, to whom he lost in UFC 47 by second round knockout. Ortiz later on came back to defeat a highly anticipated oppent Vitor Belfort in early January of 2005 by decision after surviving a brutal 'Ground and Pound' attack from Belfort in the second round.

Ortiz often wears T-shirts which insult opponents he has recently defeated.

Professional Wrestling Career

In May 2005, Ortiz followed in the footsteps of his rival Ken Shamrock when he agreed to appear with the professional wrestling promotion Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. On May 15, 2005 at TNA Hard Justice Ortiz acted as special guest referee in the NWA World Heavyweight Championship title match between Jeff Jarrett and A.J. Styles which Styles ultimately won. Ortiz is scheduled to referee the NWA World Heavyweight Championship match between Kevin Nash and the defending Jeff Jarrett at TNA Bound For Glory on October 23, 2005.
