Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort (born April 1, 1978 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) is an UFC competitor in the light heavyweight class. At a young age, Vitor had been interested in fighting, and so began to train in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with the Gracie family, namely by Carlson Gracie. He quickly received a black belt under Carlson.

Biography

At the age of 19 years old, Vitor came to the US to compete. In his first sanctioned Mixed Martial Arts match in an Event called Superbrawl in Hawaii, his opponent was John Hess, whom the young Brazilian defeated in 20 seconds.

Soon after, he moved on to compete in the UFC. Carlson Gracie told the UFC about him, and he earned the nickname The Phenom. He beat two fighters in his debut in the UFC then soundly TKO-ed Tank Abbott in a non-tournament fight in the UFC, knocking Tank down and using ground and pound tactics.

In 1997 he fought against an American Greco-Roman Wrestler named Randy Couture in a title match. Belfort found himself outclassed, his punching skills negated and was soundly defeated, TKO-ed 8:16 into the match.

After his sound defeat, he fought twice more in the UFC. His first fight was against a training partner of his: Joe Charles and defeated him quickly with an Armbar, without throwing a single punch. Due to the lack of punches and the fact that Charles was a training partner of Belfort, this match is viewed as highly suspicious.

A year later, he faced rising Brazilian star Wanderlei Silva in the UFC. Catching Silva early with a jab, he chased him across the ring with punches and pinned Silva against the fence, TKO-ing the Brazilian in less than a minute.

Vitor then moved on to fight in PRIDE. His first opponent was Kazushi Sakuraba in 1999. Vitor controlled the first minutes of the fight, but after being reversed, Belfort took shot after shot from Sakuraba for almost sixteen minutes. Belfort would just fall to the ground in guard and attempted to get Sakuraba to get in to his guard. Sakuraba, howeever, would jump stomp and kick Belfort in his legs while Belfort was on his back, offering no offense. Belfort said after the fight "I didn't fight; I survived". After the fight he stopped training with Carlson Gracie for good and started to train with Brazilian Top Team.

He fought four more times in Pride against Gilbert Yvel, Daijiro Matsui, Bobby Southworth and Heath Herring. Vitor in those fights never showed his punching skills and instead controlled the fights and won by ground and pound tactics, scoring points for decisions. Except for in his fight with Bobby Southworth: where he submitted him with a Rear Naked Choke in the first round, all his wins were by decision in Pride.

His most important fight of recent was against Chuck Liddell in June 2002. The fight was relatively close, but Vitor's endurance faded in the last round and he was knocked down near the end of the fight. The fight ended with decision in favour of Chuck Liddell.

His next fight was against Marvin Eastman in June 2003. He beat Eastman in 1:07 by KO, inflicting a large cut over Marvin Eastman's eyebrow via a jumping knee strike.

His next major fight was on February 2nd 2004 against Randy Couture (a rematch, after Vitor lost the first). Vitor won the fight in 49 seconds when a seam from his glove cut Couture's eyelid, prompting a referee stoppage. A rematch was scheduled for August 21st 2004. Couture won when the doctor stopped the fight after the third round, due to accumulated punishment.

His next fight was in UFC against Tito Ortiz February 5th 2005, where Vitor lost by split decision in a close fight.

His next fight was against Dutch Golden Glory fighter Alistair Overeem in PRIDE-Total Elimination Middle Weight Grand Prix 2005 held on april 23rd. Vitor lost the fight via a guillotine choke. Vitor said he had gone into the fight and lost, saying Overeem was a better fighter that night.
