Cross portraying Tobias Fünke in the American T.V. show Arrested Development.

David Cross (born 4 April 1964 in Atlanta, Georgia) is an American actor and comedian.

David Cross briefly attended Emerson College in Massachusetts but dropped out to begin his stand-up career. He was part of several comedy troupes in the Boston area, including Cross Comedy, which occasionally performed before and during concerts featuring local bands, most notably the Cavedogs.

Cross began his professional television career as a writer for the short-lived The Ben Stiller Show on the Fox Network, during which time he had the chance to work with Bob Odenkirk, with whom he would later co-create the HBO sketch comedy series Mr. Show with Bob and David. He currently co-stars as Tobias Fünke in Arrested Development, another Fox production. In addition to these larger roles, he has made cameo appearances on shows like Just Shoot Me and Strangers with Candy.

He has also appeared in numerous films, including Men in Black, Ghost World, Scary Movie 2 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Cross also maintains a notable stand up career consisting of material that often blends biting left-wing political commentary and crude "low brow" humor. He has released two highly-successful CDs to date, Shut Up You Fucking Baby! and It's Not Funny. He was also given his own one-hour comedy special on HBO in 1999 entitled The Pride Is Back. In 2004, Shut Up You Fucking Baby! was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. In 2003 Cross released his first tour film entitled Let America Laugh.

In 2004 Cross provided voices for a Marine in the Xbox game Halo 2, and a store clerk named Zero in the PS2, Xbox, and PC game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Both characters were often whiny and humorous in nature. He was also the voice of the violent, alcoholic "Happy-Time Harry" doll in Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

As of October 2005, Cross is appearing as the character Russ Lieber on Comedy Central's The Colbert Report.

Quotations

  • "I don't think Osama bin Laden sent those planes to attack us because he hated our freedom. I think he did it because of our support for Israel, our ties with the Saudi family and our military bases in Saudi Arabia. You know why I think that? Because that's what he fucking said! Are we a nation of 6-year-olds? Answer: yes."
  • (On the strong political nature of his stand-up act): "I've always been a bit of a news junkie, but not as much as I am now. Hopefully that will change in a matter of months and I can go back to making more abortion jokes."

Trivia

  • In several episodes of Arrested Development, Cross' character Tobias plays a British nanny named Mrs. Featherbottom. At one point in "Sword of Destiny", while rapidly switching from one role to another, Tobias' mustache is noticeably crooked – a reference to Cross wearing a fake mustache all through the series.
