Rev. John Thorneycroft Hartley (English Tennis Player) Born January 9, 1849 Died August 21, 1935 Hartley was also the only clergyman to win The Wimbledon Tennis Championship. He did it in 1879 beating Frank Hadow (walkover), and in 1880 beating Herbert Lawford 6-3,6-2, 2-6,6-3. An Oxford Graduate, he was extermely steady, unerring, but overwhelmed in the 1881 Wimbledon Men's Championship to Willie Renshaw 6-0,6-1,6-1.
