From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia John Charles McCabe III (November 14, 1920-September 27, 2005) was a Shakespearian scholar and biographer of Laurel and Hardy. A professor at Lake Superior State University, he was founder and "Exhausted Ruler" of the Laurel and Hardy fan club the Sons of the Desert, named after one of their films. His biography Mr. Laurel and Mr. Hardy is credited with helping establish the critical reputation of the comedy duo. His other books include Cagney by Cagney (1976), the ghostwritten autobiography of James Cagney, Cagney (1997), an authorized biography, George M. Cohan: The Man Who Owned Broadway (1973), and Charlie Chaplin (1978).
