From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia John Lowell (June 17, 1743–May 6, 1802) was an American lawyer and jurist from Boston, Massachusetts. He was a delegate for Massachusetts to the Continental Congress in 1782 and later served as a federal judge.
Lowell was born at Newburyport, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard in 1760, and was admitted to the bar in 1762.
He was an enthusiastic patriot and served for a time as a lieutenant of Massachusetts militia. In 1776 and again in 1777, he was elected from Newburyport to the Provincial Assembly. He is said to be the author of the declaration in the State Constitution that "all men are born free and equal."
In 1789 was appointed by President George Washington the first judge of the United States District Court for Massachusetts.
