Glen Thomas Jacobs (born April 26, 1967 in Madrid, Spain, but raised near Nashville, Tennessee, currently residing in Knoxville, Tennessee) is a professional wrestler for World Wrestling Entertainment on the RAW brand, best known for wrestling as Kane.

Early gimmicks

Jacobs has portrayed several characters throughout his career since his professional wrestling debut in 1992. He was originally known as Unabomb while wrestling in the United States Wrestling Association, Smoky Mountain Wrestling, where he was co-holder of the SMW Tag Team Championships with Al Snow, and a few early appearances with the WWF. Jacobs is believed to have debuted in the WWF as the masked Black Knight at the 1993 Survivor Series, though some fans believe that the Black Knight was actually Jeff Gaylord. He later appeared as the evil dentist of Jerry Lawler, Dr. Isaac Yankem, DDS, in 1995 and 1996 after Bret Hart damaged Lawler's teeth by forcing his foot into his mouth, and as New Diesel in 1996 and 1997, replacing the original wrestler to have played the Diesel character, Kevin Nash.

Kane

In late 1997 Jacobs was repackaged as Kane, the on-screen half-brother of The Undertaker, with whom he feuded off and on for several years. The characters' histories are that as children, Undertaker accidentally burned down the funeral home in Death Valley where they lived, killing their parents, and hideously scarring Kane. Undertaker's manager, Paul Bearer (who was billed as Kane's father), hid Kane as he grew up and Kane was thought to be dead until he returned as a 7-foot, 326-pounds, one-eyed monster heel at Bad Blood in October 1997 and attacked Undertaker during his Hell in a Cell match with Shawn Michaels. His first actual match as Kane was against Ahmed Johnson on the November 3, 1997 episode of Monday Night RAW.

The Undertaker initially refused to fight Kane, saying he would not fight his own flesh and blood for show. However, after Kane interfered in Undertaker's WWF World Heavyweight Championship match at the 1998 Royal Rumble which climaxed in Kane locking Undertaker in a casket and setting it ablaze, Undertaker returned to defeat Kane at WrestleMania XIV in March 1998.

He won the WWF Championship at the June 1998 King of the Ring pay-per-view from Stone Cold Steve Austin in a First Blood Match, which is the highlight of his career so far. However, the title reign was short lived, as Austin recaptured the title the next night on RAW. Kane went on to win the WWF Tag Team Championship with Mick Foley in July 1998 and with X-Pac in 1999. Kane had a feud with X-Pac over his girlfriend Tori, who X-Pac stole from Kane. Kane has also feuded with several of the top superstars including Triple H, The Big Show, Kurt Angle and even WWF owner Vince McMahon. In the process, Kane became one of the premier stars in the WWF. His costume changed over the course of his career, gradually uncovering his body, and even his face. Kane also evolved from speaking with a voice box to speaking without a voice box as X-Pac's tag team partner

Katie Vick

During 2002, Kane entered a feud with HHH and the two had a match at No Mercy 2002 in which the Intercontinental Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship were at stake. Triple H claimed that several years earlier, Kane had an unrequited relationship with someone named Katie Vick. After Vick was killed in a car crash, Kane – who was the driver – allegedly raped her corpse. Triple H later made good on a threat to show video footage of Kane completing his "crimes"; however, the footage clearly showed Triple H (dressed as Kane) simulating necrophilia with a mannequin. Fans were not shy about expressing their disgust with the storyline (which is considered by many as one of the worst WWE storylines ever), forcing WWE writers to bring the story to a quick end. Also, as far as Kane fans are concerned, this back-story never happened. Kane's second time as face capped a feud with Triple H, and also the "Katie Vick" storyline. With the aid of Ric Flair, HHH won the match - unifying both titles into one. At Survivor Series 2002 Kane entered the first Elimination Chamber match in history.

Unmasked

In 2003, he unmasked and turned heel once more by turning on friend, Rob Van Dam with a Chokeslam. Kane did not bear any scars or burns, despite how his face had been previously described in storylines.

At the 2003 Armageddon PPV, Kane was in a Triple Threat World Title match against Triple H and World Champion Goldberg.

After unmasking, Kane was still emotionally unstable and started on a path of destruction, leaving many victims, including RAW broadcaster, J.R. and Linda McMahon. Due to Kane's actions against his mother Linda, Shane McMahon sought vengeance from Kane. At a Last Man Standing Match at Unforgiven in 2003, Kane won after Shane McMahon climbed the event set and missed an Elbow Drop on Kane nearly 40 feet below. During the build up for the match at Survivor Series, Kane attempted to throw Shane into a burning dumpster, only to be thrown in himself. This lead to speculation that Kane was going to leave WWE or don his mask again. However, Kane returned unharmed and determined to destroy Shane McMahon. Kane won their Ambulance Match at Survivor Series that year.

Kane returned later in the night during the "Buried Alive" match between Mr. McMahon and Undertaker. Kane, helped Mr. McMahon out of the grave, then threw Undertaker into the grave and buried him alive. During the 2004 Royal Rumble match, Kane was shocked to see Undertaker return with his old gimmick as the next entrant in the Rumble. After weeks of being taunted by various scare tactics by the Undertaker, Kane lost to his brother at WrestleMania XX.

Lita

Soon after WrestleMania XX, Kane fell in love with Lita, but Lita was disturbed by Kane's affections. At the beginning of May, Kane kidnapped Lita and supposedly asked her a question before Kane let her go. On the May 17, 2004 episode of RAW, Lita gave answered yes to Kane's mysterious question. On that same night, Kane won a 20-man Battle Royal to earn Number One Contendership to Chris Benoit's World Heavyweight Championship at the Bad Blood event.

On the June 14, 2004 RAW, Kane mercilessly beat Shawn Michaels, ending his assault by placing Michaels' neck in a folding steel chair and jumping on the chair. Michaels was carried off-stage in a stretcher, portrayed with worked crushed larynx because of Kane's attack.

Later, Lita announced she was pregnant (also a work) and her then real-life and storyline boyfriend Matt Hardy assumed that he was the child's father. On the June 21, 2004 broadcast of RAW, Kane interrupted Hardy's marriage proposal to Lita and claimed to be the father of Lita's child. Kane and Hardy were booked to face one another at the upcoming SummerSlam pay-per-view event in a "Till Death Do Us Part" match, where Lita would have to marry the winner. Kane was victorious in the match and married Lita on the August 23, 2004 edition of RAW.

On the September 13, 2004 episode of RAW, Kane faced a debuting Gene Snitsky. During the match, Snitsky hit Kane in the back with a steel chair, causing Kane to fall on top of Lita. The injuries Lita suffered in the match led to a miscarriage, which immediately caused Kane to turn face and seek revenge against Snitsky for the death of his son. Kane lost to Snitsky in a steel chain match at Taboo Tuesday. Snitsky then continued to injure Kane's neck with a steel chair by crushing his larynx, in exactly the same manner Kane had "injured" Shawn Michaels several months earlier. This injury was also worked, as Jacobs was scheduled to film a WWE-produced movie, See No Evil.

Kane eventually returned and defeated Snitsky at New Year's Revolution. Later, on the January 17, 2005 RAW, he and Snitsky were booked to compete in a No Holds Barred match. The match and the show, ended with Kane chokeslamming Snitsky off the stage, with both wrestlers falling through tables and other equipment below.

At WrestleMania 21 Kane participated in the "Money in the Bank" ladder match along with Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, Christian, and Edge. After WrestleMania Kane and Lita were revealed to be happily married and conspiring to frighten Lita's rival Trish, who had been antagonizing Lita about her relationship with Kane. On the April 18, 2005 RAW, a feud between Kane and Trish's new protector Viscera began with Viscera running in and physically manhandling Kane. Kane went on to defeat Viscera at Backlash.

Feud with Edge

On the May 16, 2005 episode of RAW, Kane and Edge met in the finals of the WWE RAW Gold Rush Tournament to determine the Number one contender to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Lita would cost her husband the match and the title shot, revealing her allegiance to Edge. Two weeks later (May 30), Lita and Edge announced that she had filed for divorce from Kane, ending with the new couple flushing Lita's "wedding ring" down a toilet.

Kane interupted a storyline wedding between Edge and Lita on the June 205 edition of RAW, breaking through the ring and beating on Edge, who quickly departed with Lita. Kane then completely trashed the in-ring chapel, and ended by giving the priest a tombstone piledriver in the ring. Kane would go on to defeat Edge at Vengeance.

On the July 25 episode of RAW, Kane lost to Edge in a stretcher matchfollowing interference from Lita. Kane then knocked Edge unconscious and Tombstoned Lita. Lita was then placed on a stretcher and in an ambulance by paramedics. Kane knocked out the parademics and a police officer and drove away in the ambulance with Lita still in the back. WWE later reported that Kane had been arrested by the Cleveland police force. Kane has since been reported confined in a mental institution (in kayfabe).

Return to RAW

Kane made his return on October 17th and won an 18-man battle royal to become the third possible contender for the WWE Title at Taboo Tuesday.

Journey into Darkness

In 2005, Pocket Books, published Journey into Darkness, a fictionalized 'History' of Kane, which attempts to tie together many of the somewhat glaring plotholes in the continuity of the Kane character. This also winds up retconning a rarely remembered component of the Kane character, in that when he was first seen on Monday Night Raw, his right eye, which was white (or perhaps an off blue, since the book refers to it as being blue), was supposedly blind. This may be a continuity gaffe which Michael Chiapetta, who wrote the story, had placed into the story without knowing beforehand of the fact that the right eye was supposed to be blind (Paul Bearer specifically had claimed that Kane was missing that eye, so it may have been meant to infer that Kane's right eye was a fake). The story ties together pieces of the real life Glen Jacobs with Kane, such as giving the character the name Glen Kane Callaway (Callaway is in fact the real life surname of The Undertaker, who is in fact named Mark Callaway in the story. Many, including some on wikipedia.org, believe the name to be spelled with only one 'l', however, the inclusion of the second l into the story may have been to indicate that this was indeed a fictional 'history'. However, since Michael Chiapetta worked presumably in part if nothing else, with the WWE on the production of this book, it may well be that it is the single l spelling of the word which is incorrect, rather than the other way around.), and the fact that Kane spent time over in Spain learning his craft. It also goes on to state that Kane is the victim of a rare disorder called Hereditary Senory and Autonomic Neuropathy. This meant that Kane was incapable of feeling pain (however this infers that while Kane could not feel pain, he was still capable of feeling tacitile sensation). It also attempts to explain how Katie Vick came into contact with Kane (This was a massive continuity gaffe at the time the storyline was introduced), and also interweaves Gene Snitsky into Kane's past. However, the story deals very little with some of the much larger components of the Kane character, such as how and when he gained 'powers' similar to the Undertaker. This in itself is a continuity gaffe because of the fact that the Undertaker character has been supposedly capable of 'mystical' feats for the better part of almost two solid decades, which Kane was supposedly capable of matching. The two characters are supposedly able to teleport, and had various other powers, which included shooting fireballs and summoning bolts of lightning. It also does not explain why Kane seemed to suddenly lose his inability to feel pain and then partially regain it. Furthermore, it does not explain why this also was true of the Undertaker, nor of Mankind, one of the on-screen alter egoes of Mick Foley, who also supposedly had similar powers to the Undertaker when that particular gimmick was introduced (Mankind however never regained the same semi-invincibility that The Undertaker and Kane possessed). The story also deals very sparingly with the character of The Undertaker himself, and this is more than likely on purpose due to the fact that Undertaker is one of the few true staples of the company and there is always the possibility that any 'history' of the Undertaker would call into question many things which this book details, such as why two individuals such as Undertaker and Kane, who were supposedly possesed of such magical powers, could not in fact find one another for twenty years. It also does not explain why the parents of the Undertaker (only one of whom is directly related to Kane by blood, that being his mother) were buried on Long Island, NY, rather than in Texas where the two characters were supposedly born and, for the most part, grew up. However the book does detail the backstory of Kane with a partial filling of some, though not nearly all, of the larger plotholes behind the character introduced after the events of the Katie Vick angle, and the subsequent unmasking of Kane. The one thing it DOES explain, oddly enough, is the exact reasons as to why the Callaways died in the fire which supposedly scarred Kane. This does more or less confirm comments and assertions by the Undertaker that he'd set the fire, but his reasons for doing it were entirely skewed, apparently for the purpose of causing emotional harm to Kane himself later on in WWE storylines, but this little tidbit does dispell some theories that Paul Bearer had somehow brainwashed the Undertaker into saying that he'd set the fire. It does however, completely invalidate the earlier story the Undertaker had told about the events of the fire. So the book at the same time upholds and yet debunks certain parts of existing WWE canon.

• Jacobs has twice helped to bury The Undertaker in Buried Alive matches, interfering in his "brother's" matches at both Rock Bottom 1998 and Survivor Series 2003.
• On three occasions, Jacobs has formed tag teams with lightweight wrestlers (X-Pac, The Hurricane and Rob Van Dam). On each occasion he and his partner won the World Tag Team Championships.
• Jacobs WWF World Heavyweight Championship title reign was tied for the third shortest in history along with Bret 'The Hitman' Hart, and only trailing Yokozuna, at twenty four hours.
• Kane was part of the fourteen issue Undertaker comic book produced by the now defunct Chaos! Comics in 1999, however the character only spoke once, in the Undertaker Halloween Special, which also tied into the Mankind one shot produced by the same company. This series introduced a comics-exclusive character who was supposedly Kane's younger half-sister Jezebelle, who like Kane, was supposedly the child who had resulted from a liason between Paul Bearer and an unnamed mother. Because she is Kane's Half-sister in that they share the same father, it is presumable that she had no direct relation to The Undertaker other than through Kane, so it is questionable if indeed she can truly be called Undertaker's sister, as she was touted as being in the previews for issue five of the series. Jezebelle has not made any appearances in the WWE, however. Thus it is safe to assume that she never will, since it is now almost ten years after the series was produced.
• Jacobs holds the record for the most eliminations in the Royal Rumble match, having eliminated eleven opponents at the 2001 Royal Rumble. He also holds the record for the longest duration in the rumble at nearly seventy minutes, as the 6th entrant in the Rumble that same year.
• In 2005 a book called Journey into Darkness: The Unauthorized History of Kane was published.
• Jacobs was credited by the WWE as being the first person to break free from Chris Master's "Master Lock" hold, though Masters never actually was able to fully apply and lock in the hold.
