Vera Vasilievna Kholodnaya (1893-1919) was the first star of Russian silent cinema. Her real surname is the Russian for "cold", leading many to believe that it was actually her pseudonym. Her life was dramatized in Nikita Mikhalkov's movie Slave to Love (1975).
