William Motter Inge (May 3, 1913-June 10, 1973) was an American author and playwright, whose works feature solitary protagonists encumbered with strained sexual relations.
Born in Independence, Kansas, he attended the University of Kansas before becoming a playwright. His play Picnic earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1953. It was successfully adapted into a motion picture, as were Inge's Come Back, Little Sheba and Bus Stop. In 1961, he won an Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay for Splendor in the Grass. Inge committed suicide in Los Angeles in 1973.
For his small town settings, Inge earned the nickname "playwright of the Midwest".
