George Yates (February 26, 1843– June 25, 1876) was an officer in the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment and was killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn..
Life
George Walter Yates was born in 1843 in New York. He met George Armstrong Custer in Monroe, Michigan and they became close friends. During the American Civil War, Yates was a 2nd Lieutenant and Custer got him placed on General Alfred Pleasonton's staff. Yates earned some brevets for his actions during the war.
After the war, Yates was appointed to Captain in the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment under Custer and given command of F. Company. He was a member of the so-called "Custer Clan" or "Custer Gang" of close-knit friends and relatives of the General.
Yates was killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn and fell near Custer. He is buried in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
