From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia Nick Joaquin (May 4, 1917–April 29, 2004) was a Filipino novelist, essayist, playwright, poet and biographer. His real name was Nicomedes Joaquin and was born in Paco, Manila, Philippines. As a youth, he dropped out of high school to work. He read widely at the National Library and on his father's library. This developed further his interest in writing.
He is known for writing the following:
- Prose and Poems (1952)
- the award winning novel The Women Who had Two Navels (1961)
- La Naval de Manila and Other Essays (1964)
- A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino
- Manila, My Manila: A History for the Young
- The Ballad of the Five Battles
- Rizal in Saga
- Almanac for Manileños
- Cave and Shadows
He also won the following awards and contests:
- Jose Garcia Villa's Honor Roll (1940)
- Philippines Free Press Short Story Contest (1949);
- Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Literary Awards (1957-58);
- Stonehill Award for the Novel (1960)
- Republic Cultural Heritage Award (1961)
- National Artist Award (1976).
Joaquin used the pen name Quijano de Manila as a journalist.
He died of cardiac arrest in the early morning of April 29, 2004 at his home in San Juan, Metro Manila.
