Richard Schechner is the founder of the Performance Studies department of New York University (NYU). He is also renowned for founding The Performance Group, an experimental theater troupe. While the troupe disbanded in 1980, it gave rise to another experimental theater company, The Wooster Group, which continues to mount productions to this day.
